Steve Spagnuolo is back in the NFL.
The former Giants defensive coordinator and interim head coach was officially named to the DC position with the Chiefs on Thursday.
Spagnuolo, 59, was out of football in 2018 after three seasons with the Giants. Previous to that, he was the Big Blue DC from 2007-08 before helming the Rams from 2009-11 and was the Saints defensive coordinator in 2002. He had a second stint with the Giants from 2015-17.
He joins Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City, having worked under Reid with the Eagles as a defensive backs and linebackers coach from 1999-2006.
Spagnuolo replaces Bob Sutton, who was fired Tuesday after the Chiefs fell to the Patriots 37-31 in overtime of the AFC Championship game. He’ll have his work cut out for him in Kansas City, inheriting what was one of the league’s worst defenses that might also be without looming free agent Dee Ford next season.
