Former Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, who stepped down last year after his cancer returned, said Saturday night he is cancer-free.
“My health is great,” Alderson said. “Since I took a leave of absence from the Mets last summer, I’ve had chemo and surgery — my third surgery — but at this point, based on the medical definition, I’m cancer-free and have been for four months.”
Alderson, 71, was honored at the New York Baseball Writers’ Association dinner at the Hilton in midtown.
He was the Mets GM from 2010 until last year and wished his successor, Brodie Van Wagenen, well. Van Wagenen also was in attendance.
Among the other honorees were Yankees GM Brian Cashman, Mariano Rivera, part of this year’s Hall of Fame class, NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom and recently retired David Wright. The 1969 Mets were also commemorated.
As for Alderson’s future, he jokingly said he was “waiting for [Manny] Machado and [Bryce] Harper to sign” before making his next move.
