Tony Romo will call his first Super Bowl for CBS on Sunday. Romo, 38, was a four-time Pro Bowler and has been one of the biggest stories of the playoffs, because of his unmatched ability to predict plays, his brilliant analysis and his enthusiasm. He breaks down the big game, as told to The Post’s Andrew Marchand:
It is not random why these two head coaches will be on the sidelines for the Super Bowl. While Bill Belichick is the greatest coach in any sport all time, Sean McVay is rare, too.
I’m not going to call McVay a “young Belichick,” because you don’t throw around random comparisons. But McVay’s offense is brilliant. It is both exotic and simple.
That is why on Sunday, I’m most fascinated to see the ability of both coaches to adjust their plan as the game goes on; especially McVay’s Rams offense against Belichick’s Patriots defense. Who is going to need to adjust first? Belichick or McVay?
The reason I say the Rams offense is both exotic and simple is because they might run just six plays for an entire half. When you watch it, it makes you say, “Wow, they are just running one of these six the entire half!”
However, there is so much going on each one of those plays they are difficult to defend. On each of the six plays, they have six options.
You never know which one is coming because they all look the same. They all start off the same, they all come together the same and then, all of a sudden, you are late.
Coach Belichick is better than anyone in football history at coming up with a plan to slow an opponent down.
His secret is not that he can come up with plans that no one else can. Rather, what is one of the most underrated things about Belichick is how he gets his players to relearn a new scheme each week to win the most important situations.
He spends far more time changing things up from week to week than any other coach. Other teams are just running their defense and then they’ll sprinkle in a third-down package for the week.
Belichick’s approach is multidimensional. He is not married to anything when he runs a scheme. It is why they give up yards, but they are always great in scoring defense. They are trying to win the most important situations every single game.
The Patriots never draft in the top 15, but they find guys who can learn. I think that is a huge advantage, if you can coach and get everyone to learn it. That’s the hard part, making it so all your defenders understand the new scheme each week. I can’t wait to see what Belichick comes up with for McVay.
With Jared Goff, McVay has made him better. The second and third years can really tell a lot about the progress of a quarterback. When I turn on the tape, Jared has made some really difficult throws look easy. He is a good player.
Tom Brady is the best football player ever. These Patriots are here for a ninth time because you have Belichick’s mind on defense and Brady’s on offense.
What they have done together is unreal. I don’t think it will ever happen again. It is the perfect storm of the best and the best.
I got to play for a legend in coach Parcells and I enjoyed every minute. I learned a lot. Anytime you have a chance to be around someone like that it is going to help you.
In two years at CBS, having those pregame meetings with coach Belichick has been one of my favorite things and asking him, “Why did you do this?” It is fun to learn. He has so much knowledge.
Sean is the same. They don’t make many with the football knowledge, the communication skills , the love, the energy, the passion, the feel, the nuance, the ability to trust his players and the ability to go with your gut. Sean has all that.
Those two going against each other is going to be really special. That is what I’m most fascinated about on Sunday.
