Legionnaires’ breakout from NYCHA water leaves 2 sick
An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease left two people sick and officials battling to clean toxic bacteria out of the water system at NYCHA’s Bronx River Houses.
The Health Department disclosed the infestation in a letter Wednesday to tenants at 1575 E. 174th Street.
“The risk of getting sick from a building’s water supply is very low, especially for healthy people,” the letter said.
However, it went on to warn residents who are older than 50 and smoke, suffer from chronic lung disease or have weakened immune systems to avoid creating mist that allows the bacteria to become airborne — suggesting baths instead of showers.
