In the midst of his team’s 90-70 blowout loss to Ohio State on Tuesday night, Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery drew a technical foul for apparently stepping onto the court.
Off the court and after the game, however, McCaffery reportedly did something that could land him in much hotter water.
According to multiple reports, the No. 22 Hawkeyes’ coach followed an official down the hallway in Value Center Arena and screamed at him: “You cheating motherf–ker! You’re a f–king disgrace!”
The Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland and a photographer for The Columbus Dispatch both reported those were the words McCaffery used. After the game, the coach was asked about the alleged incident during his news conference.
“I can’t talk about that,” he said.
The game was a particularly tough one for the McCaffery family. Fran’s son Connor, a freshman on the team, received his first career technical with 4:08 to play in the game. Fran drew his technical foul 58 seconds later.
When asked about Connor’s technical during the news conference, Fran McCaffery said, “I can’t … I would love to, I can’t.”
McCaffery is no stranger to run-ins with officials. Among his most infamous moments: an ejection for bumping an official in 2014, breaking a chair during a tirade with an official in 2012, and a 2006 game while coaching at Siena during which both he and his wife were ejected.
