Less than two hours before he was scheduled to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, President Trump criticized reporting about the summit, and argued the two nations would work together for denuclearization.
“All false reporting (guessing) on my intentions with respect to North Korea,” Trump tweeted from his hotel in Hanoi.
“Kim Jong Un and I will try very hard to work something out on Denuclearization & then making North Korea an Economic Powerhouse. I believe that China, Russia, Japan & South Korea will be very helpful!” he added.
Trump is scheduled to meet Kim at about 6:30 p.m. local time Wednesday during the two-day summit on denuclearization of the communist nation. The first meeting between the two leaders was in June 2018.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump met with Vietnamese leaders and touted the business relationship between their country and the US.
Trump said the Vietnamese economy was “thriving” in part because of its relationship with the US — and used it as an example of what is possible for North Korea if it agrees to denuclearize.
“We [Trump and Kim] both felt very good about having this very important summit in Vietnam because you really are a good example of what can happen,” Trump said after meeting with the Vietnamese president.
