Jets coach Adam Gase went out of his way to praise Sam Darnold’s current weapons at the combine. Could he and the Jets be looking to give their franchise quarterback another?
The Jets’ official Twitter account posted a video of freakishly athletic Ole Miss receiver D.K. Metcalf’s 40-yard dash Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Metcalf, who is 6-foot-3, 228 pounds, did it in 4.33 seconds.
“4.33? At that size? We see you, @dkmetcalf14,” the Jets’ post read.
Metcalf, who missed last season at Ole Miss because of a neck injury, also bench pressed 225 pounds 27 times and was impressive during the gauntlet drill, catching all seven passes thrown his way. He broke down crying on the combine floor after Facetiming with his mom following a performance that could make him a top-10 pick in the draft.
“Very emotional,” he told the NFL Network’s Kim Jones. “I’m not supposed to be here right now.”
Metcalf told Yahoo Sports he doesn’t like comparing himself to anything else, because it puts an expectation on him.
“Then they are going to be looking for me to do ‘him’ numbers when I’m me,” Metcalf said. “I don’t like to compare myself to anybody because I’m me and nobody’s seen me yet.”
Someone with the Jets liked what they saw from him Saturday.
