The chairmen of three House committees that are investigating the administration sent a letter to the White House about President Trump’s conversations with Vladimir Putin and his reported attempts to keep the details on the down low.
Chairmen Adam Schiff of the Intelligence Committee, Elliot Engel of Foreign Affairs and Elijah Cummings of Oversight addressed the letters to chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
“According to media reports, President Trump, on multiple occasions, appears to have taken steps to conceal the details of his communications with President Putin from other administration officials, Congress, and the American people,” the three wrote, referring to reports that Trump seized his translator’s notes after one conversation with the Russian strongman.
They also want to know if Team Trump destroyed any records related to his conversations with Putin.
Trump has met with Putin five times since he was sworn in, including at least once when no other American was present.
Special counsel Robert Mueller is also looking at the president’s sit-downs with his Russian counterpart as part of his investigation into the Putin-ordered meddling in the US election.
