Andrea Martin, who safely flew through the air in Broadway’s “Pippin” revival six years ago, broke four ribs rehearsing her new Broadway show.
That said, Nathan Lane will have a new co-star in “Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus,” Taylor Mac’s comedy about cleaning up the corpses after a grisly, post-Roman Empire civil war.
There were no details as to how Martin, 72, was hurt. But the former “SCTV” star continued rehearsing a week after she was injured before finally calling it quits. Kristine Nielsen, who had a smaller role in the show, will step in for her while Tony winner Julie White (“The Little Dog Laughed”) takes Nielsen’s part.
“I am heartbroken to have to leave the production, and have tried to convince the doctor that my funny bone is stronger than my broken ribs,” Martin said. “But regretfully I must follow the doctor’s orders.”
“Gary,” set to start previews on Tuesday, March 5, at the Booth Theater, has moved back its first performance to Friday, March 9. The April 11 opening has yet to change.
