A defiant Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó landed at Caracas’ airport Monday in time to join street protests against the repressive government of President Nicolàs Maduro.
“We know the risks that we face, that’s never stopped us,” the 35-year-old leader of Venezuela’s National Assembly said as he moved through a crowd that included several Western ambassadors.
He arrived after flouting a court-imposed travel ban by touring Latin American countries to boost support for his campaign to oust Maduro.
“Hope has been born and it will not die — things are going well,” Guaidó told a crowd later at a plaza in the Las Mercedes district. “We are going to celebrate this small victory today.”
He announced plans to meet on Tuesday with public employees, who have been historically pressured by the ruling Socialist Party to join pro-government rallies, as well as for a major march on Saturday.
