1 dead after fire tears through Long Island building
A fast-moving fire tore through a Long Island apartment building early Tuesday morning — killing an elderly woman and injuring a firefighter, authorities said.
The blaze broke out shortly before 2:45 a.m. in apartment 7D of a building within Fairfield Courtyard complex on Country Club Drive in Coram, Suffolk County police said.
Police officers evacuated residents and pets, but at least one of the buildings was “completely engulfed,” according to police and video obtained by The Post.
When the flames were extinguished, firefighters discovered 71-year-old Susan Harelick in the same apartment where the fire had started, police said.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries when one of his legs fell through the floor, a Coram Fire Department Official told The Post. He was treated at the scene and did not require further medical attention.
Investigators do not suspect any criminality, police said.
