2 teens dead after being electrocuted trying to rescue dog in canal
Two teenage boys from California were found dead in a field — both electrocuted — after attempting to rescue a dog from an irrigation canal, cops said.
The teens had been walking through the wet canal on Monday, trying to save the pooch, when they touched a nearby gate that was electrified, according to police officials.
Authorities in Dixon said they received a report of two youths found “unresponsive” in a local field, though it’s unclear who alerted them. Someone apparently saw the boys in the water and plucked them out before calling cops.
A helicopter crew from California Highway Patrol’s Golden Gate Division Air Operations unit responded with local firefighters and sheriff’s deputies but were unable to save the pair.
“Unfortunately, the outcome was one that no first responder or parent wants to have,” officials wrote on Facebook. “After attempting all lifesaving measures available to us in the prehospital setting, both teenagers were pronounced deceased at Kaiser Vacaville.”
The dog that the boys were trying to rescue, however, managed to survive. The local sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
