A teenager died Tuesday in a bloody wreck that seriously injured two other teens and left a trail of twisted metal and debris on a road known to Brooklyn residents for frequent speedsters.
Claudio Poggy, a 19-year-old from Flatlands, lost control of his car just after 4:30 p.m. while heading north on Kings Highway and hit the tree near the intersection of Avenue D, police said.
“They were drag racing,” witness Mark King, 22, told the Post.
King said he saw two cars speeding down the highway, where the speed limit is only 25 mph, when one driver lost control.
Kimberly Stewart, 35, said that was common for the stretch of road from Foster to Tilden avenues. Some drivers get up to 60 mph if they hit the lights right, she said.
“The lights all turn green at once and they go — they don’t stop,” she said.
“This has been going for years. We asked them for a camera about 15 years ago. They did nothing.”
Poggy was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. EMS rushed the 16-year-old front passenger to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center and the 19-year-old in the backseat to Kings County Hospital, police said.
Both were in critical condition, authorities said.
“It was all bloody,” King said. “When they cut him out of the car it was all bloody.”
It was unknown how Poggy lost control of the car, police said. The NYPD is investigating.
