A high school baseball player in New Jersey was allegedly gagged, bound and dragged across the field as part of a sick hazing ritual, officials said.
The West New York Board of Education confirmed Tuesday there was a “bully/hazing” incident involving student-athletes, but declined to provide further details, NJ.com reported.
The alleged incident at Memorial High School was reported by an anonymous school employee to the local mayor, NJ.com reported.
West New York Mayor Feliz Roque said Wednesday baseball players on the high school team participated in the hazing, which was filmed and posted to social media.
“It’s abhorrent to see this type of behavior in our school system,” Roque told NJ.com.
Superintendent Clara Brito Herrera issued a statement saying the district is “committed to conducting a thorough investigation and pursuing disciplinary/corrective action, if warranted.”
The high school athletic director declined to comment to NJ.com and referred questions to district officials.
The school’s varsity baseball game scheduled for Wednesday was postponed until the following day because of “logistical issues,” according to NJ.com.
