A Texas teen beat his mom to death with a baseball bat and slit her throat when the woman walked in on him and a pal burglarizing her home, according to police and a new report.
Matthew Dempsey and Daniel Saucedo, both 18, were arrested on capital murder charges in connection with the slaying of Mary Dempsey, 53, San Antonio police said.
An arrest affidavit obtained by the San Antonio Express-News said Dempsey confessed to killing his mother as Saucedo helped. He told police the pair went to his mom’s home on San Antonio’s west side Monday night or early Tuesday, according to the report.
They used a key to get inside, then started “gathering items they were going to take from the home,” according to the affidavit. Dempsey was carrying a loaded gun, authorities told the paper.
As the pair prepared to leave with their loot, Mary Dempsey returned home and flicked on the lights, the affidavit says. Then her son bludgeoned her from behind with the bat, and Saucedo joined in, police told the outlet.
They finished off their inhuman attack by slitting the woman’s throat with a knife they grabbed from the kitchen, Dempsey reportedly told investigators. He allegedly handed his accomplice some duct tape to bind the woman and wrapped her in a blanket from her bedroom, according to the affidavit.
Then they finished off the burglary job — going through the woman’s wallet and loading the stolen items into her car, the paper reported. Saucedo left in the car, and both teens later withdrew money from Mary Dempsey’s account using an ATM, the affidavit says.
The woman’s employer realized something was fishy Tuesday morning when she didn’t show up to work or answer calls — so they notified her daughter, the paper reported.
The daughter went to the home and found it “ransacked.” Spotting something under a blanket, she “stepped closer to the blanket and saw it was covering a person and saw a pool of blood,” according to the affidavit.
She called 911, and first responders pronounced her mother dead at the scene, the paper reported.
Investigators obtained surveillance video showing two men leaving the home that night and early morning — and began to suspect Dempsey was involved in his mother’s death, according to the report.
They found a trash bag with bloody clothes inside his mobile home, the affidavit says.
Dempsey later returned home with his girlfriend, and cops questioned both, the paper reported. Dempsey’s girlfriend first admitted her beau had confessed to killing his mother with Saucedo — and then Dempsey owned up to the crime, according to the affidavit.
Dempsey was charged in connection with the slaying — and obtained a warrant for Saucedo, who was later also taken into custody.
Both men were booked into the Bexar County Jail on $1 million bail each, the paper reported.
