New ‘Game of Thrones’ photos tease epic showdown in Episode 5

The penultimate episode of “Game of Thrones” Season 8 is featured in new photos release Wednesday. They tease a King’s Landing showdown between Queen Cersei (Lena Headey) and her nefarious pirate flunky Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaek) and…pretty much everyone else. It’s Cersei against the world:

Jon (Kit Karington) and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) are shown outside the city, planning an attack.

Tellingly, some key players are not shown in preview photos. Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) dramatically left the North for King’s Landing last episode, after finally getting together with Brienne (Gwendoline Christie). A relationship that built for seven seasons was over in 15 minutes. In his vague breakup speech, he didn’t make it clear if he was going after Cersei in a self-destructive way to die by her side — or whether he aims to kill her. Presumably, it will be revealed in this episode.

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) is also on her way to kill Cersei, and she, too, is tellingly absent from photos.

Jon and Varys (Conleth Hill) are shown on the beach, perhaps planning a water attack.

Daenerys, shown below, looks sad, possibly mourning the deaths of her dragon and her advisor Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) last episode. Note: her braids are not as intricate without Missandei to help her. A blurry figure is pictured next to her out of frame, perhaps Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson), Missandei’s beau.

Euron Greyjoy was triumphant last episode, slaying one of the dragons, but he looks nervous here. Maybe Dany is bringing fire and blood to him in retaliation.

Cersei’s hired army of mercenaries, The Golden Company, stands ready for a fight. Their leader, Harry Strickland (Marc Rissmann), is a new character this season, so he can’t be long for this world.

Cersei looks smug as usual. Could she be looking at a newly returned Jaime — who’s either returned to pledge his love or back to pretend to do that before trying to kill her?

Grey Worm is facing someone (likely Dany) in the Dragonstone Throne room. He could be plotting revenge for the death of his girlfriend.

And finally. Tyrion stands alone looking grave. Since the prior episode was called “The Last of the Starks” and his siblings are in peril, could this one be called “The Last of the Lannisters?”
