Drake reversed the “curse” for one night.
The famed rapper and Toronto sports fanatic, known for having an unlucky effect on his favorite teams and athletes, posted a video on his Instagram Live feed of him wearing a pair of 76ers shorts.
The video came in celebration of his Raptors beating Philadelphia 92-90 on Kawhi Leonard’s ridiculous buzzer-beater in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference second-round series in Toronto on Sunday night. It is Toronto’s second trip to the conference finals in four seasons, where they will face the Bucks.
“Yes sir. Yes sir,” Drake said on the video before showing his blue 76ers shorts and then the television with friends yelling in the background.
He joked about the “Drake Curse” after the Raptors won their first round series over the Magic in five games, telling reporters: “You want me to talk about the curse or you guys good?” on his way out of Scotiabank Center.
The stigma around Drake, who often sits courtside for Raptors game, has a long history. It includes the Raptors being unable to break through to the NBA Finals, and picked up more steam in April when he was shown in attendance for Game 4 of the Maple Leafs first round playoff series with the Bruins wearing a No. 6 Leafs jersey. Toronto lost 6-4 that night and fell in the series.
Also in April, Drake posed for a photo with Paris Saint-Germain’s Layvin Kurzawa that the soccer standout posted on Instagram. Two days later, Paris Saint-Germain lost to Lille 5-1. AS Roma later tweeted that “All Roma players banned from taking photos with Drake until the end of the season”.
Drake has been a bad luck charm for Alabama football, Conor McGregor and even then-girlfriend Serena Williams at the 2015 U.S. Open.
With the Raptors heading to the Eastern Conference finals and Ben Simmons (who is rumored to still be dating Kendall Jenner) and the 76ers are heading home, maybe it’s time to explore the Kardashian curse?
