ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — After getting hit on top of the head by Guillermo Heredia’s back swing in the eighth inning of the Yankees’ 7-2 loss to the Rays on Saturday night at Tropicana Field, Gary Sanchez went through some concussion tests.
Though the Yankees’ catcher said he felt OK, the big test would be how he feels Sunday.
“I got hit hard there. I feel good right now. Got to wait and see [Sunday],’’ Sanchez said.
Considering Sanchez caught the past three games and Sunday is a day game following a night tilt, he likely wasn’t going to catch Masahiro Tanaka anyway. That assignment will go to Austin Romine.
Now, the Yankees will be extra cautious with the middle-of-the-order hitter.
“They did a couple of tests. They did some of the tests here and we will wait and see how I feel [Sunday],’’ said Sanchez, who went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, was hit by a pitch and charged with a throwing error that second baseman DJ LeMahieu should have handled.
