Bran is the surprise star of the ‘Game of Thrones’ finale

So who ended up on the Iron Throne?

Spoilers below for the end of “Game of Thrones.”

The answer is no one — because Drogon melted it with his flaming breath.

But who had Bran Stark in their office pool?!

The series finale ended with Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) as not just the meme king online (thanks to fans mocking his creepy behavior) but the actual King. However, the wheel was kind of broken, because earlier in the episode, Drogon melted the Throne with his fire. Bran was then elected by a council of nobles from each kingdom, including the new Prince of Dorne whose name we still don’t know.

So Bran is king, with a council of advisors, ruling the Seven Kingdoms in a benevolent oligarchy. Or technically six, since the North remains independent, under the reign of Queen in the North Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner).

It’s an underwhelming end after years of debating “who will win” since Bran Stark at one point was so inconsequential a character that he was benched for a whole season.

But Arya (Maisie Williams) got a fitting sendoff, sailing off to explore what’s West of Westeros – a question she posed in Season 6. And Jon (Kit Harington) finally pet Ghost.

Author George R.R. Martin once said the end will be “bittersweet” and often cites “Lord of the Rings” as an inspiration, and it looks like both Jon and Arya got Frodo endings while Sansa and Bran got Aragorn endings.

Since Jon killed Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) earlier in the episode, it’s sure to be a divisive finale. But now our watch has ended.
