Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez backs fellow democratic socialist for Queens DA

Justice may be blind — but it’ll be seeing red if Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has anything to say about it.

The rising lefty star, whose district straddles the Bronx and Queens, endorsed long shot candidate and fellow democratic socialist Tiffany Cabán on Wednesday in the upcoming Queens District Attorney race.

“Tiffany Cabán, a career public defender with a powerful vision of a community-led justice system, is running for Queens District Attorney — and we’re incredibly proud to endorse her,” Ocasio-Cortez’s camp wrote in an announcement soliciting donations for the campaign.

Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement represents a bucking of the Democratic establishment, backing the Working Families Party-backed Cabán instead of more mainstream candidates like Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and City Councilman Rory Lancman.

“If Tiffany wins, things are going to change,” vowed the message from Team AOC. “Instead of criminalizing poverty, we’re going to dedicate resources towards prosecuting abusive landlords. Instead of targeting people who use marijuana, we can go after the drug companies that took advantage of working-class folks for profit.”

The field for next month’s primary election opened up when longtime Queens DA Richard Brown announced earlier this year that he would step down on June 1 due to his failing health — a move he never got to make when he died earlier this month at the age of 86.
