Patrick Reed’s club doesn’t survive his meltdown at No. 18

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Patrick Reed had a minor meltdown on his final hole of Friday’s U.S. Open second round at Pebble Beach, snapping a wedge over his knee on the 18th hole.

Reed was even-par for the tournament heading into the last hole and, after hitting his third shot into the deep rough over the green, he chipped the ball back into the rough on the side of the green. Reed then barely advanced the chip a foot or so, and angrily broke the wedge over his right knee.

He took another wedge, chipped three feet past the hole and made the putt for a double-bogey 7 to make the cut on the number at 2-over. So he will play the weekend at Pebble — with a new wedge.

Reed’s broken wedge wasn’t the first club to find its demise on No. 18 this week. On Thursday, Lucas Bjerregaard threw his driver into the Pacific Ocean after hitting two drives into the salt water and taking an 11 on the hole.
