Iran released 2017 image of falling drone claiming it to be latest attack: report

An image posted by Iran’s official news agency purporting to show the US drone falling out of the sky after being hit by a missile actually shows another US drone being shot down over Yemen in 2017, according to a report.

The Islamic Republic News Agency, or IRNA, circulated a photograph of a spiraling aircraft accompanying an article about the shoot-down of the RQ-4A Global Hawk, suggesting the two were one and the same.

However, the same photo appeared in a two-year-old report on news outlet Yemenat, which reported that it was an MQ-9 Reaper going down near Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Oct. 1, 2017, The Sun reported.

It was unclear whether Iran mistakenly shared the old photo or whether Tehran was deliberately trying to spread misinformation.
