Cameron Maybin survived the roster crunch Thursday night with Aaron Judge’s return.
The veteran outfielder did not, however, make it through Friday completely unscathed.
Maybin was removed from the game with strained left calf after the third inning and replaced by Aaron Hicks. He was set to undergo an MRI Friday night, the Yankees said.
After scoring on Gary Sanchez’s home run in the bottom of the third, Maybin limped back into the dugout. He may have originally hurt himself when sliding back into first base after singling two batters earlier.
The 32-year-old had caught fire of late, making sure the Yankees had to keep him around once Judge came back from the injured list. Entering Friday, Maybin was batting .308 with an .882 OPS in 41 games since the Yankees acquired him from the Indians.
Maybin was starting in left field, with Brett Gardner in center, because Aaron Boone wanted to give Hicks another day to rest a sore right shoulder. Hicks got a cortisone injection on Thursday after an MRI revealed inflammation.
