A woman drowned in the waters off of Fire Island Sunday as violent storms tore across Long Island, police said.
Suffolk County Police said a passerby spotted the woman in the water near the Seaview Marina around 3:40 p.m. and rushed in.
The man, who called 911, kept the woman afloat on the paddleboard until Marine Bureau officers arrived.
Officers pulled her onto a boat and took her to Marine Bureau headquarters at Timber Point, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators believe the woman, whose name is being withheld until her family is notified, was swimming when she drowned in rough waters amid severe thunderstorms in the area.
