The women who allegedly slaughtered a pregnant Chicago teenager and ripped the baby from her womb pleaded not guilty on Monday to the death of the newborn.
The baby, Yovanny Jadiel Lopez, died weeks after Clarisa Figueroa, 49, and her 24-year-old daughter Desiree Figueroa allegedly cut him from his mother’s womb.
The women previously pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges in the death of the mother, 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez, whose decaying body was found May 15, dumped in a garbage can behind a home on the city’s Southwest Side.
The nine-months-pregnant teen had been missing for about three weeks when her body was found.
The defendants had allegedly lured her to Clarisa’s home April 23 with the promise of free baby clothes.
Then, they allegedly strangled her, cut her baby out of her womb and pretended Clarisa had just given birth to the boy when they called 911 to report that he was not breathing.
The baby suffered severe brain damage during the grisly incident and died in June.
Cook County prosecutors announced the additional first-degree murder charge in the boy’s death last month.
