Experts weigh in on Justin Bieber’s anxiety attack tips

Justin Bieber has been very open about his mental health struggles lately. Now he’s imparting his hard-earned psychological wisdom to his fans.

The “Sorry” singer recently posted an image to his Instagram with advice from his sage grandmother — instructions on a technique called “grounding.”

“Tips to help with an anxiety attack,” the photo reads.

“Find five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste,” Bieber’s Insta post continues. “This is called grounding. It can help when you feel like you have lost all control of your surroundings.”

The 25-year-old pop star captioned the post: “My gramma just shared this with me. Share [if] this helps u.” A few of his boldface-name followers thanked the Biebs, sometimes adding a bit of their own advice.

“SO SO SO useful,” wrote actor Taye Diggs. “Atta boy!”

“When I’m having anxiety attacks I put a cold rag on my neck my forehead and my chest,” said ex-“Survivor” contestant and mental health advocate Rodney Lavoie Jr. “Lay down for 10-20 mins. Put on your music playlist. 5 seconds in. 5 seconds out. Breathing on the way out hard pushing through your abs.”

Turns out, Bieber’s “gramma” might be on to something.

“[His grandma] is super on point,” says Jennifer Wolkin, Ph.D., a Manhattan-based clinical health and neuro psychologist. “I often use this with clients who are experiencing general anxiety, panic attacks, difficulty regulating emotions and even after trauma.”

The aptly named “54321 grounding technique,” says Wolkin, is “meant to direct attention away from either a rumination spiral or physical sensations that are unsettling, like a racing heart, for example,” adding that it’s basically a type of “mindfulness practice.”

The idea behind the method is to get the person outside of their own heads, where their racing thoughts “[perpetuate] a cycle of anxiety,” Wolkin says. “It’s a great tool … for clients to use and practice on their own in between [therapy] sessions.”

Bieber, who has been on a professional hiatus while focusing on his health, wed 22-year-old Hailey Baldwin at an NYC courthouse last fall, and the two are planning a wedding reception with family and friends in South Carolina for next month.
