Hong Kong police were bracing for yet more transportation-crippling demonstrations on Saturday.
The city’s Chek Lap Kok airport and its rail and road links were being patrolled by police, who were limiting access to passengers only in hopes of avoiding the chaos of previous demonstrations, when activists took over the airport, delaying and canceling flights.
Already Friday night, hundreds of protesters, many masked and wearing black, trashed a subway station in the nearby town of Tung Chung, throwing debris on the train tracks.
“We’re a bit nervous seeing all these police. We’ve been watching the fighting on the television and we don’t want to be part of that,” traveler Kurt Cruzat told Reuters.
The 20-year-old Filipino student was on his way to study in Israel.
“I’ll be happy once we’re on the plane,” he said.
