A 1-year-old girl in a stroller was killed Tuesday when a driver jumped a curb in the Bronx and plowed into her, according to police.
The toddler was hit on the sidewalk near East 215th Street and White Plains Road in Williamsbridge at about 4 p.m. after the driver lost control of his white BMW SUV, according to the NYPD.
Witnesses described the horrific scene.
“I heard a screeching sound, then a boom. Then I heard a lady screaming,” said Beverly Taylor, 54, from the Bronx.
“The car hit the stroller. [The mother] was saying ‘Oh my God. Oh my God.’ She was crying.”
Within moments, a group of good Samaritans rushed to aid the mother and push the SUV away from the wall.
Atta Bofu, 43, one of those passersby who helped move the vehicle, recalled the heartbreaking moment they reached the little girl, but realized it was too late.
“I pushed the car and it moved a little,” said Bofu, of The Bronx.
“That when I saw the pink shirt and baby. I went to grab her. But the baby was gone.”
Bofu, who handed the toddler to her mother, said, “I’ve never seen such a thing like this before. I feel bad. I’m a family man… I did my best to support the lady.”
Another witness drove the mother and the child to a nearby hospital — but sources said the baby was already dead when they arrived.
The driver remained at the scene, but as of late Tuesday was still being questioned police.
