Grading the Jets after their 23-3 Week 2 loss to the Browns on “Monday Night Football.”
Offense: F
Yes, the Jets were missing starting QB Sam Darnold, but they still needed to be better than this. They managed just three points and had minus-13 passing yards at halftime. It got a little better in the second half, but not much. RB Le’Veon Bell (21 rushes for 68 yards, 10 catches for 61 yards) played hard but could not carry this group. The offensive line was awful. LT Kelvin Beachum gave up three sacks to Myles Garrett.
Defense: C
The defense kept the Jets in the game for a while. The unit gave up some yards, but kept the point total down. Then, Odell Beckham Jr. (six catches, 161 yards, TD) gashed the D for a long score. Browns QB Baker Mayfield (19 of 35, 325 yards, TD, INT) was not great, but he did enough.
Special Teams: B
The only bright spot in this one was Sam Ficken, who made his only field-goal attempt. The Jets’ new kicker made a 46-yarder before halftime. The leg of punter Lachlan Edwards (seven punts, 47.0 average) might fall off if he keeps having to punt this much.
Coaching F
Gregg Williams deserves a lot of criticism after giving Beckham fuel with his dumb comments about OBJ not being a dynamic player. Beckham ran right through Williams’ defense. Adam Gase needs to go back to the drawing board with his offense. He is on his third quarterback, so he deserves to be cut some slack, but this offense still needs to get better.
