‘The Devil Wears Prada’ musical sets Chicago premiere

Gird your loins, Chicago — Miranda Priestly is heading your way.

A highly anticipated musical based on Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling 2003 novel “The Devil Wears Prada” — and the subsequent 2006 hit movie starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway — will make its premiere at Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre on July 14, 2020, for at least a one-month run, according to the Chicago Tribune. No casting has been announced, but the show will be directed by Tony winner Anna D. Shapiro (“August: Osage County”) and feature music by Elton John, lyrics by Shaina Taub and a book by Paul Rudnick.

The novel and film follow an in-over-her-head aspiring journalist, Andy Sachs — Hathaway in the film — hoping to break into the big leagues who lands a job as an assistant to prickly fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Streep), a character often assumed to be based on Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Faced with Miranda’s soul-crushing disdain for her dowdy attire and tendency to “move at a glacial pace,” Andy transforms herself from frump to fashionista — but at a high cost. The movie also stars Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker and Adrian Grenier.

No date has been set for the show’s later Broadway debut.
