Person shoots self in parking lot of VA hospital in Chicago

Someone died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of a Chicago veterans hospital Friday, police said.

The person was inside a car in the parking lot of the Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center when the fatal incident occurred at around 3:50 p.m. local time, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Further details were not immediately available.

The 200-bed, federally operated medical center on Damen Avenue provides services for roughly 62,000 enrolled veterans who reside in the city of Chicago and Cook County, Illinois, and four counties in northwestern Indiana.

The incident comes two days after an elderly man reportedly shot and wounded his stepdaughter before fatally shooting himself in the parking lot of Illinois’ Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

In that case, the shooter was identified as 73-year-old Robert Shek and woman identified as 44-year-old Imelda Shek, WGN-TV reported.

Imelda was critically wounded, according to the news outlet.
