A widespread search was underway Sunday evening for a West Point cadet who disappeared with a rifle and “may be a danger to himself,” officials said.
The cadet was last seen at about 5:30 p.m. Friday. He had been expected to participate in a military skills competition over the weekend but never showed, the US Military Academy said.
His M4 rifle was also missing, but officials said they don’t believe the cadet has any magazines or ammunition with him.
“There is no indication the Cadet poses a threat to the public, but he may be a danger to himself,” the military said in a statement.
Fellow cadets began scouring the grounds for him Friday evening, with military police taking up the search around 1 a.m. Saturday.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department and State Police aided in the search Sunday, using a helicopter, K-9 units and drones. The US Coast Guard was also searching the coastline.
The missing cadet is part of the Class of 2021. He wasn’t named.
