The body of a 5-year-old girl was found in a South Carolina trash heap months after a man confessed to killing her and her mother, officials said Tuesday.
Nevaeh Lashy Adams was discovered Friday after 400 volunteers scoured through 4 million pounds of material in the Richmond County landfill, according to Sumter Police Department.
DNA tests confirmed the remains belonged to Nevaeh, who was presumed dead after her mother, 29-year-old Sharee Bradley, was discovered stabbed to death Aug. 5 inside her apartment.
“This is not the outcome any of us would have wanted but we hope this can provide some closure to the family,” Sumter Police Chief Russell F. Roark III said in a statement. “We will continue working with the 3rd Circuit Solicitor’s Office to bring this case to trial.”
Police charged 28-year-old Daunte Johnson, who was allegedly seen fleeing the scene of the crime.
He later confessed to killing both Bradley and her daughter, as well as tossing the girl in the dumpster, officials said.
