Sterling Shepard likely missing next Giants game amid concussion battle

Not yet. But soon.

Sterling Shepard is not expected to be taken out of the concussion protocol this week and thus will not return to play wide receiver for the Giants in time for Sunday’s game at Detroit, The Post has learned. But if he continues on the path he is on, Shepard will likely be cleared in time for the Nov. 4 “Monday Night Football” game against the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

In Week 5, Shepard suffered his second concussion in four games when he took a hit against the Vikings and reported not feeling well the next day. At the time, a source said Shepard would be out “a while,” based on the frequency and proximity of the two concussions.

This time frame constitutes “a while.’’

Wednesday, Shepard was a limited participant in practice, available for only non-contact action. This was the case last week as well, and Shepard says he feels fine and is ready to play. His frustration is tempered by the knowledge there are speed bumps in place to protect him from returning too soon.

“He’s been out there practicing pretty much full,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “But he’s still in the protocol. That’s kind of a unique answer to the question, but that’s where he’s at right now.”

Shepard has missed three games this season because of concussions and in all likelihood will miss a fourth this weekend.
