A 14-year-old boy was shot in the neck and killed late Saturday on the basketball court of a Queens housing project, police said.
The victim, identified by his family as Amir Griffin, was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center after being rushed there following the 8 p.m. shooting at Baisley Park Houses on Foch Boulevard in Jamaica.
“He’s dead,” said Larry Jarvis, the boy’s stepfather. “Great kid. All he does is play basketball. He’ll wake up at 7 o’clock in the morning to play basketball. He’d be here or across the street.”
Jarvis, 44, said the teen — whose nickname was “Buddy” — was a student at Benjamin Cardozo High School and “never missed a day in school.”
He said a neighbor woke him and Griffin’s mother up and told them of the shooting.
“I don’t know what’s going on out here,” Jarvis said. “I don’t know I can’t piece this together.”
Griffin’s Facebook page attests to his passion for basketball — his Facebook profile picture is a Nike “Basketball Never Stops” ad, and his posts include a pic of Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry.
A neighbor in the public housing complex described Griffin as “a really good kid, really into his basketball. I’ve seen him with a trophy once.”
“I never seen him get into any trouble,” she added. “He was just a nice young kid. His mom really loved him.”
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
Clothing, debris and splattered blood remained on the court in the aftermath of the shooting.
