Black Lab gives birth to shocking litter: ‘They were just flying out’

Everyone seriously underestimated this mother’s load.

Beau, a descendant of a Crufts dog show champion, has given birth to one of the largest black Labrador litters ever.

Beau’s human owners suspected she was pregnant with a large litter — but they never guessed she had 13 puppies growing in her tummy.

“We thought there could be up to eight,” says dog breeder Leah Barrett, SWNS reports. She’d taken Beau for an ultrasound five weeks into her pregnancy, and vets estimated only five or six pups.

But when Beau went into labor, it quickly became clear that figure was more than a little off.

“After seven were born in just 40 minutes — we were all absolutely gobsmacked,” says Barrett, who lives in Kent, England. “They were just flying out.”

One female puppy was nearly lost when Beau’s placenta came loose and the fur baby became trapped in the birth canal. “She was there for 40 minutes. By the time we got her out, she wasn’t breathing or moving,” says Barrett.

She managed to save her by using suctioning equipment to suck the fluid out of her lungs, a tactic Barrett had learned while reading up on the subject.

The pups, now 7 weeks old, are all thriving and have names corresponding to their personalities. Barrett named the one who nearly died Hope, and she’s now among the biggest of the brood.

Due to Beau only having 10 teats to feed her 13 offspring, Barrett spent the first few weeks of the dogs’ lives hand-feeding the runts of the litter.

“They’d probably have died otherwise,” she says, calling the experience of delivering the dogs the “most beautiful” thing she’s ever done.

The pack goes through some 200 bags of dog food daily, but soon Barrett will only have Hope and one other pup — named Bear — left to care for.

The rest she’s selling for $1,221 each.

The record for the biggest black Lab delivery is held by Scottish Lab Annie, who gave birth to 15 puppies in 2014.
