Nearly 200,000 people have been forced to flee their homes as out-of-control wildfires continued to scorch California on Monday, leaving 2.5 million without power, according to news reports.
The largest of the blazes, which spread through the state’s wine country north of San Francisco last week, has now burned through more than 100 square miles with the aid of hurricane-force winds.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Sunday as the Kincade Fire raged on despite the efforts of more than 3,000 firefighters.
Shortly before dawn Monday, yet another inferno flared up west of Los Angeles.
Identified as the Getty Fire, it quickly spread across 500 acres (¾ square mile) and prompted evacuation orders for 10,000 homes and businesses, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said.
The fire threatened some of California’s most exclusive neighborhoods, CNN reported.
A number of high-profile celebrities were among those forced to flee, including Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who said on Twitter he and his family were forced to evacuate their Brentwood home.
