Driver flees with license plate after ramming truck through convenience store
Wild video captured the moment a pickup truck rammed through a Michigan gas station convenience store — and the driver, shortly after, ripping off the truck’s license plate before fleeing.
But it wasn’t long before police caught up to 24-year-old William Edmonds following the crash at a BP gas station in the village of Ortonville last Thursday.
Edmonds told authorities he was attempting to spin the new tires on his black pickup truck before he accidentally accelerated and plowed into the building, WBTV reported.
Footage published by the news outlet shows the vehicle smash through the entrance of the store and come to a stop fully inside the shop.
While inside the wrecked store, Edmonds can be seen attempting to pull the rear license plate off the truck amid a mess of destroyed store shelves and broken items strewn on the floor.
Edmonds rips off the license plate, causing him to fall on his behind before he flees the store, the video shows.
Miraculously, no one was injured inside or outside the store, according to WBTV.
Police busted Edmonds 13 hours later after a store employee recognized him as a regular customer, according to the news outlet.
The employee told police that Edmonds bought a beer, opened it and got into his truck moments before the crash at 2:30 a.m.
Police arrested Edmonds at his residence in Groveland Township and he was charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
Edmonds, who said he didn’t mean to hit the building or hurt anyone, copped to drinking a beer and trying to spin his tires near the gas pumps, WBTV reported.
He claimed that after the crash, he got spooked, so he pulled his license plate off.
Edmonds was later released on $5,000 bond, according to the news outlet, which reported that he was also ordered not to visit the BP station and to take a drug and alcohol test twice a week.
