An elderly woman jumped to her death from a Lower Manhattan high-rise near the Brooklyn Bridge Monday morning, police said.
The 87-year-old woman, whose identity was not immediately released, leapt from the 17-story South Street building — which is part of NYCHA’s Alfred E. Smith Houses complex — at around 7:20 a.m., cops said.
She was found by authorities in the rear courtyard of the building near Robert F. Wagner Sr. Place and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
“I guess she felt that her life was no longer worth living. I don’t understand it,” a NYCHA worker said following the tragic incident.
“My son saw the body before they covered her up,” the worker said. “He called me up and was crying. He’s very sensitive. I wouldn’t ever want to work on that side of the building again.”
Authorities said that the woman did not have any ID on her at the time. It was not clear what floor she jumped from, or whether she left a note.
