The Blue Rush podcast had one question after the Giants’ 31-26 loss Sunday to the Lions in Detroit: “How long until pitchers and catchers report?”
The Giants fell to 2-6 on the season, partly because of another costly turnover, mostly because the secondary couldn’t cover a pool in December. To put it in Motown terms, “It’s the Same Old Song,” after Mathew Stafford beat the Giants on a flea flicker and left us crying “The Tears of a Clown.” The Giants said afterward they would gather Monday for the dreaded players-only meeting.
But Super Bowl XXV MVP Ottis Anderson says “You Can’t Hurry Love” and Giants fans need to be patient because even the championship teams he played on had their growing pains. Anderson gives the inside scoop on the greatest Super Bowl ever played and reveals exactly what’s going through a player’s mind when Whitney Houston is hitting a high note and Scott Norwood is hitting a low note. He also shares his list of the most underrated players in NFL history and explains why he sees so much of himself in Saquon Barkley.
Giants beat writer Paul Schwartz is in a less forgiving mood, throwing the challenge flag on Pat Shurmur’s refusal to throw his challenge flags and wondering whether the coach knows “What’s Going On” after his questionable decision to go for two late in the third quarter.
On the plus side, the Giants did manage to cover the 7-point spread, so the good news is we’ll live to see next week’s game against the Cowboys. The bad news is we’ll live to see next week’s game against the Cowboys. Mercy, Mercy Me.
On running backs like Ottis Anderson
Anderson: [Saquon] Barkley is pretty much a younger me. I like Nick Chubb. Adrian Peterson in his prime was probably the best that ever did it.
On the current state of the Giants
Anderson: I’m optimistic about it. I think they are going to be a lot better as they get older. I think we need to add some players here and there that are going to solidify the young core with the players we have. Everybody goes through this. Every team that plays this game that has been on the highest level we have been on and has been as successful as we have been is going to go through these issues.
