A veteran NYPD sergeant was arrested early Monday morning for allegedly beating up his wife in front of their two young children at the family’s Staten Island home, authorities said.
Sgt. Charles Stewart, 49, was busted at around 3 a.m. after he allegedly punched his wife in the head during an argument on Sunday night at their Palmer Avenue residence, police said.
Stewart hit his wife and then held her down on the ground in front of the couple’s 6- and 7-year-old sons, according to a criminal complaint.
Stewart, who has been with the NYPD since 2001, was charged with assault, harassment and endangering the welfare of a child.
The sergeant — who raked in $174,254 in fiscal year 2019 — has been suspended without pay, the NYPD said.
He was arraigned Monday and released without bail.
Stewart could not be reached for comment because uniformed cops outside his home refused to let a reporter approach the house.
The NYPD did not respond to a request for comment on why it provided the detail.
