Pittsburgh bus plummets into sinkhole while waiting at red light
The wheels on the bus go off the ground.
A Pittsburgh city bus made an unscheduled stop Monday when it suddenly plummeted into sinkhole while waiting at a red light just before 8 a.m., according to reports.
The bus was stopped on Tenth Street at Penn Avenue when the ground beneath it cave it and its rear half collapsed into the newly-formed crater, WPXI reported.
Stunning photos show the vehicle straddling the edge of the pit with its front wheels floating in the air.
Fortunately, just two people were aboard, Pittsburgh law enforcement said on Twitter — the driver and one passenger. The passenger was treated for minor injuries.
A Blue Kia Optima also fell into the to the pit, and has since been removed.
Two large cranes were en route to get the bus out of the sinkhole as of 11 a.m.
The area will be closed to traffic for another eight to 10 hours, officials said.
