Even the sun can go incognito for Halloween.
A photo captured by NASA makes the sun appear “something like” a jack-o’-lantern face, the agency says in a Facebook post Sunday. The haunting image was first captured in 2014 by the Solar Dynamics Observatory from its space orbit, where it watches the sun at all times.
“The active regions in this image appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy,” NASA explains. The two sets of ultraviolet wavelengths the photo combines are typically colorized in gold and yellow “to create a particularly Halloween-like appearance.”
In the lead up to the costumed holiday, the agency reposted the somewhat sinister image to social media.
“Even our star celebrates the spooky season,” NASA writes on Facebook.
