Trump says ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is ‘dead as a doornail’
President Trump proclaimed that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is “dead as a doornail” Monday, addressing a gathering of police chiefs in Chicago.
“He was a sick and depraved man and now he’s dead,” the president said at the International Association of Chiefs of Police annual conference. “And he didn’t die bravely, either.”
Trump said that al-Baghdadi should have been taken out by previous presidents and that he was focused on getting the jihadist leader since he entered the White House.
He said military officials would tick off names of terrorists they had killed.
“I’d said I never heard of him. I want al-Baghdadi. Get him and they got him,” Trump said. “But he was big-time. He built the ISIS caliphate. He built ISIS, that was him.”
He said the terror state has been destroyed and the fighters are being held in prison.
“Now we want the countries in the region to police their own borders. We don’t want to be a policeman in this case,” he said.
Trump announced on Sunday that al-Baghdadi blew himself up with a suicide vest as he tried to escape US special forces who raided his compound in northern Syria near midnight on Saturday.
