LA wants sealed takeout bags to stop drivers from stealing food
The City of Angels wants to stop its gig-economy workers from delivering food they’ve already sampled or sipped.
Kathryn Barger, supervisor for the County of Los Angeles, proposed a motion Tuesday to impose strict sanitary standards on food deliveries, including having sealed takeout bags that would stop delivery drivers from snatching loose fries.
The proposal comes as people across the country post stomach-churning reports of delivery workers sharing their food, including a viral video earlier this year showing a delivery person sneaking a sip of a milkshake before ringing the doorbell of the Stockton, Calif., homeowner who ordered the beverage. In another widely reported story, a Yorktown, Pa., diner complained he opened his order only to discover two of his six ribs had been eaten.
The proposed changes would lead to “a stronger, more effective seal on delivery bags and greater confidence in food delivery services,” Barger’s spokesman, Tony Bell, told The Post. The idea “is to make sure bags are secure with a seal before it’s given to the driver.”
The California Restaurant Association said it supports the measure.
