Seahawks’ Tyler Lockett does not need surgery after frightening shin injury

Seahawks Nation can breathe a sigh of relief.

According to multiple reports, Tyler Lockett does not need surgery after suffering a bad shin bruise in Monday night’s 27-24 overtime win over the 49ers.

Head coach Pete Carroll told 710 ESPN Seattle on Tuesday morning that their star receiver “should be OK going forward” after spending the night at Stanford Hospital. Lockett had been admitted amid concerns that the lower leg contusion he suffered could have caused compartment syndrome, a condition that can occur when excessive swelling cuts off blood flow to muscles. Compartment syndrome can require surgery, depending on the severity of the symptoms.

“It shouldn’t be a big problem going forward,” Carroll said. “There’s concern there could be some complications when you have something like that.”

Carroll lauded the speed and diligence of the Seahawks medical staff, both of which are crucial when handling this rare syndrome. While he did not provide specifics on a timeline for his return, a source told ESPN’s Dan Graziano that Lockett may not miss any games since the Seahawks have a Week 11 bye. Their next game is against the Eagles on Nov. 24.

The fifth-year receiver from Kansas State has made a significant impact on the Seahawks offense this year. He ranks fifth in the NFL among receivers in total yards and is tied for fourth in both receptions and touchdowns.
