Uno removes red and blue cards to keep Thanksgiving ‘politics-free’

Holiday fun with the family should always be free of politics, and the game-makers at Mattel want to make sure of it.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, the traditionally primary-colored card game Uno has been recast without red or blue — which have traditionally represented the colors of the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively.

Their classic red packaging is now purple, and the two missing cards have been replaced with purple and orange version. There is also a new “veto” card, which can be used to skip the next player’s turn — but only if they thoughtlessly bring up politics during the game.

The updated game, dubbed “nonpartisan Uno,” is available at Walmart and online during the holiday season.

“Forty percent of people admit that opposite political views and voting patterns are problematic within their families,” Mattel stated in a promotional video for the game, who references data by YouGov. “While political discussions are important, sometimes it’s just as important to take a break, especially with family!

Some on social media are calling out Mattel for their blatant marketing ploy, and urging people to focus on bigger issues than starting fights with their family.

“Anyone who is triggered by a CARD GAME really needs a reality check,” said one frustrated Twitter user. There’s enough that’s seriously wrong in this world that a CARD GAME should not be a source of divisive angst for anyone.”
