At least 20 people were killed and 21 injured when a double-decker bus plummeted down a steep ravine in Chile on Sunday, according to news reports.
The packed bus was traveling along a curvy road near Taltal, about 150 miles north of Santiago, when it plunged between 65 and 98 feet into the ravine late Sunday, the Mexican newspaper Excelsior reported Monday.
Photos from the wreckage show a horrifying scene, with the bus in tatters and debris and personal items strewn about.
Local prosecutor Ricard Castro told the newspaper that the cause of the accident was likely “human error or mechanical error, something that will be established based on expert opinions.”
Castro said rescuers were not ruling out the possibility that more bodies could be found under or around the wreckage, Excelsior said.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Taltal.
