Search crews looking for a 6-year-old girl who was swept away by floodwaters in Arizona on Friday found a shoe they believe may belong to the girl.
The shoe was discovered in a pile of debris Sunday evening, about 200 yards from where a family’s military-style truck got stuck in Tonto Creek, near the border of New Mexico, amid heavy rains, the Arizona Republic reported.
“At this time we believe that it may belong to the little girl that we’re searching for,” said Lt. Virgil Dodd of the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.
Dozens of people continued to look for Willa Rawlings on Monday.
Her parents, Lacey and Daniel Rawlings, were in the truck with seven kids when they tried to cross the overflowing creek and were pulled into a hole by the strong current, authorities said.
As floodwaters mounted, the dad and four children were able to make it out and were rescued from an island. The mom also escaped and made it to a nearby bank.
The bodies of Willa’s 5-year-old brother, Colby, and their 5-year-old cousin, Austin, were found in the creek Saturday.
Crews planned to continue the search for the missing girl at dawn Tuesday.
