XFL’s Guardians show off jerseys ahead of league’s relaunch
New York’s XFL franchise, the Guardians, debuted their look Tuesday for the reinvented league’s upcoming season.
At a private dinner to kick off minicamp, head coach Kevin Gilbride showed off a black, gray and red ensemble meant to evoke the concrete, steel and street of the city, with the “fiery eyes and ferocious teeth, and the burning ambition of everyday heroes.”
The team will wear black at home and gray on the road.
The eight-team league — a reincarnation of the 2001 version that lasted one season and was famed for WWE inspiration — kicks off its season on Feb. 8, 2020, with New York hosting the Tampa Bay Vipers. It will feature forced kick returns, extra-point scrimmage plays instead of post-touchdown field goals and overtime shootouts.
Aside from the former Giants coach Gilbride, the most notable names on the Guardians’ roster are quarterbacks Matt McGloin and Marquis Williams among other NFL castoffs. Former Giant Jarron Jones and ex-Jets Victor Oshi, TJ Barnes and Deangelo Yancey are also on the team.
